International Women’s Day is celebrated annually to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. Despite progress, women face significant obstacles to achieve equal participation in the economy and calls for ensuring equal opportunity for women and girls to build their capabilities and strengthen their capacity to learn, earn and lead. Achieving gender equality and women’s well-being in all aspects of life is more crucial than ever if prosperous economies are to be
built. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted women, from reduced economic opportunities and decreased access to reproductive and maternal health care, to increased incidence of sexual exploitation and gender-based violence. A key challenge of $360 billion annual deficit needs to be addressed in gender-equality measures by 2030.
Approximately, $13 trillion could be added to global GDP if best-in-region-gender-parity improvements are achieved by 2030.
